Xana
Sound Designer & Composer | 2024 Bursary

“My practice focuses on being experimental with whatever resources I have to hand and breaking the concept of what traditional forms can be. More than ever theatre as a form of protest needs to be protected and utilised, so that the ways in which we can build resistance, beyond our common silos can be shared with on another. This project is the start of highlighting voices of Caribbean and African history who started revolutions and how they organised to topple monoliths, leaving behind a spirit of rebellion for their descendants. From my experience as a sound designer creating accessible sound systems, at this early stage, I will be using haptic vest technology testing how audiences can experience the work, through vibration and making it sound accessible from the start. The fund from MGC will support the beginning of the audio play, allowing me time to also write some of the music that will feature as the album woven into the fabric of the story.”
The bursary will allow Xana to develop a musical audio play exploring the story of the Maroon warrior Queen Nanny of Jamaica, incorporating a haptic vest to include access at the core of the project through vibration.
