Marcelo Dos Santos awarded Most Promising Playwright at the 2024 Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards

After a successful West End run of his play Backstairs Billy, directed by Michael Grandage, 2019 MGCfutures Bursary recipient Marcelo Dos Santos has been awarded Most Promising Playwright at the 2024 Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards.

Marcelo received a bursary in 2019 to research and develop his play Militant. In 2023, the Michael Grandage Company produced a successful run of his play Backstairs Billy at the Duke of York’s Theatre, starring Penelope Wilton and Luke Evans. Furthermore, his play Feeling Afraid As If Something Terrible Is Going to Happen was produced by Francesca Moody Productions at the Edinburgh Fringe, winning both the 2023 Scotsman Fringe First and The Stage Edinburgh Award, and later transferring to the Bush Theatre to critical acclaim.
